Essence Music Festival Lineup

 The Essence Music Festival 2011 marks the 17th anniversary of the three day concert series. Many individuals are new to the origin of the music festival.

Essence Magazine, a Black women lifestyle magazine, gave birth to the Essence Music Festival in 1994 to celebrate the magazine's 25th anniversary. In line with the Houston Chronicle, the first festival attracted 142,000 people and reach over 250,000 people in recent years.

The Essence Festival is recognized as a celebration of Black American music and culture. For days gone by 10 years it's lineup has always featured a varied array of contemporary R&B, soul music, hiphop, jazz, and gospel music.

In 2001, the lineup included artists such as Destiny's Child, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Patti LaBelle, Kelly Price, Jill Scott, Teena Marie, Joe, Erykah Badu, and many others.


The festival took a solemn tone in 2003 when certainly one of its biggest headliners, Luther Vandross, passed away. A beautifully diverse lineup of Hiphop and R&B artists alike joined together for an all-star "home going" tribute to Luther that featured artists Nelly, Anita Baker, Jamie Foxx, P. Diddy and the Bad Boy Family featuring New Edition, Faith Evans, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Smokey Robinson, Jaheim, Chaka Khan, Wanda Sykes, Heather Headley, Nappy Roots, and that doesn't even begin to scratch the outer lining of numerous popular artists that came out to celebrate the life and music of Luther Vandross and the Essence Festival.


In 2005, The Black Eyed Peas were a late edition to the lineup which also included artists Aretha Franklin, Destiny's Child, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Mo'Nique, and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Lionel Richie, John Legend, Teena Marie, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard, Kem, and many others.


The 2011 Essence Music Festival lineup features a modern mixture of hiphop, r&b, funk music,jazz, gospel, soul music, and New Orleans local brass bands. The recently announced lineup boasts Kanye West, Trey Songz, Mint Condition, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, Dwele in a Superlounge, and so many others. In traditional Essence Festival fashion, expect more individuals to obtain included with the lineup in March or late April.
